Soon, if not already, many of us will receive up to $1400 as a result of a bill recently passed by Congress. Some of us need that money badly. We have been financially stressed by the results of the pandemic in our lives and need cash for the basics of life. Others of us, including myself, do not need that money, or at least part of it, in order to get by. And yet we are aware of others who need even more help than that.
When there are so many in need, it is the joy of those who have more than they need to share it with our brothers and sisters who are struggling. I call upon those of us who find the $1400 to be a surplus, to share that money. Some ways to share it, I suggest, are:
—-donate it to Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Lexington (
Donate Now – Catholic Charities) in order to help victims of the flooding in Eastern Kentucky and to help those in need in our diocese who fall between the cracks and don’t fit the criteria needed to receive pandemic aid from the government
—- donate it to Mary Queen Parish (
Donation) to help erase the deficit spending we have been forced into, in order to carry out our mission in the midst of this pandemic.
Our response to the money that some of us are receiving can lead us to “practice resurrection in the places of crucifixion” in this challenging Lent in the life of the world.
