Liturgical Prayers-  Orations

For our continuing series on liturgical prayers we will discuss the orations.  These are the three prayers that the priest specifically offers on behalf of the people during the Mass.  They are the Collect, the Prayer over the Offerings, and the Prayer after Communion.  There are some commonalities in the way in which these prayers are offered.  They are all preceded by an invitation to pray offered by the priest and conclude with simple doxology like “through Christ our Lord” with the people responding Amen. Additionally during all of these prayers the priest has his hands raised with palm slightly up in what is called the orans positions.  Another similarity is that of our posture.  The people stand during all of these orations and have no specific position for our hands.

The priest offers these prayers on behalf of the people, and they each serve a specific purpose.  The Collect or as it is sometimes called the opening prayer. Occurs after the Glory to God and is the final part of the Introductory Rites.  This prayer serves as an opportunity to collect (recollect) our thoughts and turn from the distractions of the outside world.  We formally turn our focus to God. The Collect may refer to the particular feast being celebrated and provides as close to a theme for the Mass as we can get.  The call to prayer “let us pray” should be followed by a period of silence.  During this time is the best opportunity to bring out personal needs and intentions for the Mass. 

The Prayer Over the Offerings are the first words we utter after the offertory.  The call to prayer is longer here “pray brothers and sisters…” and we have a longer response “may the Lord accept the sacrifice” and then immediately to the prayer which presents the gifts with hope for the action of the coming Eucharistic prayer.  

The Prayer After Communion occurs after communion and the cleaning of the vessels. Out of the silence the priest calls us to pray and the people stand.  This prayer reflects on the mystery and prepares us to go forward. 

All of these prayers serve a purpose of making us and the Mass more holy/sacred.  In preparation for the Mass, for the consecration and our sending forth.  May we open our ears to these prayers and  accept the work of the Holy Spirit through them.

Oraciones Litúrgicas- Oraciones

Para nuestra serie continua sobre oraciones litúrgicas discutiremos las oraciones.  Estas son las tres oraciones que el sacerdote ofrece específicamente en nombre del pueblo durante la Misa. Son la Colecta, la Oración sobre las Ofrendas y la Oración después de la Comunión.  Hay algunos puntos en común en la forma en que se ofrecen estas oraciones.  Todos van precedidos de una invitación a orar ofrecida por el sacerdote y concluyen con una simple doxología como “por Cristo nuestro Señor” y el pueblo responde Amén. Además, durante todas estas oraciones, el sacerdote tiene las manos levantadas con las palmas ligeramente hacia arriba en lo que se llama posiciones orans.  Otra similitud es la de nuestra postura.  La gente está de pie durante todas estas oraciones y no tiene una posición específica para nuestras manos.

El sacerdote ofrece estas oraciones en nombre del pueblo, y cada una de ellas tiene un propósito específico.  La Colecta o como a veces se le llama la oración inicial. Ocurre después del Gloria a Dios y es la parte final de los Ritos Introductorios.  Esta oración sirve como una oportunidad para ordenar (recordar) nuestros pensamientos y alejarnos de las distracciones del mundo exterior.  Formalmente dirigimos nuestro enfoque a Dios. La Colecta puede referirse a la fiesta particular que se celebra y proporciona lo más parecido posible a un tema para la Misa.  El llamado a la oración “oremos” debe ir seguido de un período de silencio.  Durante este tiempo es la mejor oportunidad para sacar a relucir las necesidades e intenciones personales para la Misa.

La Oración sobre las Ofrendas son las primeras palabras que pronunciamos después del ofertorio.  El llamado a la oración es más largo aquí “oren hermanos y hermanas…” y tenemos una respuesta más larga “que el Señor acepte el sacrificio” y luego inmediatamente a la oración que presenta los dones con esperanza para la acción de la próxima oración eucarística.  

La Oración Después de la Comunión ocurre después de la comunión y la limpieza de los vasos. Desde el silencio el sacerdote nos llama a orar y la gente se pone de pie.  Esta oración reflexiona sobre el misterio y nos prepara para seguir adelante. 

Todas estas oraciones tienen el propósito de hacernos a nosotros y a la Misa más santos/sagrados.  En preparación para la Misa, para la consagración y nuestro envío.  Que abramos nuestros oídos a estas oraciones y aceptemos la obra del Espíritu Santo a través de ellas.
