Liturgical Prayers- All Shapes and Sizes

Our experience of the Mass has multiple modes and means.  One of the primary is prayer.  In a sense you can look at Mass as an extended form or prayer which opens with the sign of the cross.  Within the Eucharistic liturgy though there are several types of prayer.  Over the next few weeks we will dig deeper into the various types of liturgical prayer not just at Mass but also including the liturgy of the hours.

During Mass we have orations (prayers led by the presider on behalf of the people), litanies(within which we respond with a common phrase), private prayers(said personally or under the breath), petitions(in which we ask something of God), blessings(upon people or items).  These prayers are not just words spoken, but are imbued with sacred power to help transform our lives and tangibly impact the world.  

The most important prayer of the Mass is the Eucharistic Prayer with several components.  This includes the preface which connects the liturgical celebration to the Eucharist. Also there are acclamations in which we corporately state the truth of the Mass.  The Holy, Holy, Holy mirrors the text of Isaiah (our 1st reading this week) and the worship of the angels as we enter into the heavenly mystery of our Eucharistic worship.  Also included is a calling down of the Holy Spirit to be present with us and in the elements and then a presentation of the institution of the Eucharist.  This is followed by prayers of petitions to the intimately present Jesus and concludes with a triune doxology of thanks (Eucharist means thanksgiving) and the joining of all voices into the seminal Lord’s Prayer. 

At some Masses we offer special prayers of blessing and petition for those who are experiencing or preparing for the sacraments (marriage, confirmation, baptism, anointing of the sick) and for other special needs and occasions.  

This panoply of prayers helps cover the scope of our human needs and hopes.  This series will also explore devotional prayers like the rosary, litanies, novenas, and more… May these various prayers deepen our faith and impact the world for the Kingdom of God.

Oraciones litúrgicas: todas las formas y tamaños

Nuestra experiencia de la Misa tiene múltiples modos y medios.  Una de las oraciones principales.  En cierto sentido, la Misa puede verse como una forma extendida de oración que comienza con la señal de la cruz.  Dentro de la liturgia eucarística existen varios tipos de oración.  Durante las próximas semanas profundizaremos en los diversos tipos de oración litúrgica, no solo en la Misa sino también en la liturgia de las horas.

Durante la Misa tenemos oraciones (oraciones dirigidas por quien celebra en nombre del pueblo), letanías (dentro de las cuales respondemos con una frase común), oraciones privadas (dichas personalmente o en voz baja), peticiones (en las que pedimos algo a Dios ), bendiciones (sobre personas o artículos).  Estas oraciones no son solo palabras pronunciadas, sino que están imbuidas de un poder sagrado para ayudar a transformar nuestras vidas e impactar tangiblemente al mundo.  

La oración más importante de la Misa es la Plegaria Eucarística con varios componentes.  Esto incluye el prefacio que conecta la celebración litúrgica con la Eucaristía. También hay aclamaciones en las que declaramos corporativamente la verdad de la Misa. El Santo, Santo, Santo refleja el texto de Isaías (nuestra primera lectura de esta semana) y la adoración de los ángeles a medida que entramos en el misterio celestial de nuestra adoración eucarística. .  También se incluye un llamado del Espíritu Santo para que esté presente con nosotros y en los elementos y luego una presentación de la institución de la Eucaristía.  A esto le siguen oraciones de peticiones al Jesús íntimamente presente y concluye con una doxología trina de gracias (Eucaristía significa acción de gracias) y la unión de todas las voces en el Padre Nuestro seminal.

En algunas Misas ofrecemos oraciones especiales de bendición y petición para aquellos que están experimentando o preparándose para los sacramentos (matrimonio, confirmación, bautismo, unción de los enfermos) y para otras necesidades y ocasiones especiales.  

Esta panoplia de oraciones ayuda a cubrir el alcance de nuestras necesidades y esperanzas humanas.  Esta serie también explorará oraciones devocionales como el rosario, letanías, novenas y más... Que estas diversas oraciones profundicen nuestra fe e impacten al mundo para el Reino de Dios.
