What an exciting Community Problems Assembly on Monday, Nov, 4! About 290 people from all over Lexington gathered at Consolidated Baptist Church. There were 40 from MQHR. It was especially exciting to welcome a new congregation, Ahava Spirituality Center. They are excited about joining in the work of Justice.
We got very exciting updates on the 2 current issues. Lextran has started the microtransit feasibility study and should be completed in the Spring. The Eldercare issue also got great news! The city council has approved $150,000 to go to A Caring Place to study and start our first Villages Model.
We heard a wonderful reflection by Bishop John Stowe on the privilege and responsibility of voting. It was especially significant hearing it on election eve. He stressed how BUILD is so important to the Lexington community because we are organized and have our power locally and that night we would be voting on the new issue to work on, based on the stories we have been hearing in our house meetings these past months.
The issues we had to choose from were: home ownership/homelessness; drugs/addiction; renter concerns. The issue voted on by a big majority was renter concerns! This is an issue that affects many people in all our congregations and we are excited to start the research process and see how to help Lexington renters who struggle with rental issues.
The next step is to RESEARCH the problem and then look for winnable solutions. The research kick off will be Dec. 9, 6:30 at 2nd Presbyterian. I love the research process and invite you to come and get as involved in it as you want to.
