Bishop Stowe To Celebrate Opening Synod Mass Oct. 17, Kicking Off Local Stage of Global Process for the Catholic Church
A global process of dialogue and discernment convened by Pope Francis will get its start in the Catholic Diocese of Lexington on Sunday, Oct. 17. Bishop John Stowe, OFM Conv. will celebrate the Opening Mass of the Diocesan Synod at 11:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King. The Diocesan Synod is the local stage of the 2021-2023 Synodal Journey announced by the Vatican, which Pope Francis will open on Oct. 10. Following the Oct. 17 Mass, Bishop Stowe will present an overview of what a synod is and what this process means for the whole Catholic Church. The diocesan phase of the Synodal Journey is expected to run from October to next April. "The Synodal Journey is not about a new way to have meetings, but it is about the way to become the Church that God is calling us to be,” said Bishop Stowe. “The language of synodality means that we have to progress together on the path towards the Kingdom of God and to do so together means clergy, religious and laity all speaking and listening as the Holy Spirit directs us…This process is not only for those who are active in the Church, but includes those who have been away, who have become indifferent, or those who are genuinely seeking.” In early September, the Vatican published a preparatory document to help local churches get ready for this process.
