A STORY OF 10,000 HATS
Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary’s Hand ‘n Heart Hat Ministry knits and crochets adult hats and makes scripture cards for those that are undergoing cancer treatments and crossed a 10,000 milestone! And it all started at Baptist Health.
How it all started: In early 2016, Lois Vogel, a MQHR parishioner, underwent surgery at the Baptist Health Cancer Center and during a follow-up visit with her oncology surgeon, Dr. Hope Cottrill, a story was playing on the waiting room’s TV screen featuring a story about a group of women creating hats for cancer patients undergoing medical treatments that caused hair loss.
It was there in the Baptist Health Cancer Center’s waiting room that the idea of bringing a hat ministry to Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary (MQHR) got its start.
The ministry turned SEVEN years old in August 2023 and is blessed with 20 + wonderful and talented women who generously give of their time, talent, and treasures. They have created over 10,000 hats and scripture cards during this timeframe.
Each hat and scripture card are crafted, then blessed by an ordained minister, and finally delivered to loved ones and to cancer treatment centers in Lexington, KY and its surrounding areas.
Ongoing mission: We pray for and look forward to a cure of all cancers, but till then, MQHR’s Hand ‘n Heart Hat Ministry continues knitting, crocheting, and making scripture cards with love and serving those that are going through a difficult time in their lives.
If you or a loved one are in need of one of our hats, or if you are interested in joining this awesome ministry, please contact Becky Estep at [email protected] or 859-277-9036.
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
