MARY QUEEN SCHOOL FINANCIAL ACCESSIBILITY UPDATE: WALTER LEACHMAN
DISCUSSION: Mary Queen was blessed with a major, unsolicited donation on Christmas Eve. The donors have agreed that the vast majority of it would make Mary Queen school more financially accessible. Also, Bishop John has agreed to exempt the gift from the Diocesan assessment tax. With this donation in hand, there have been a variety of meetings with various committees providing financial scenarios, insight and feedback.
The most recent meeting was on January 19th with a combined input from the Parish Finance Council, School Finance Committee, and the School Council. The meeting adjourned without a proposal, and with a need for further analysis. The two main options openly discussed involved: 1) a reduction in tuition rates for 2017-18 and an increase in tuition assistance that would project a cash flow loss of $223,002 based on certain assumptions, and 2) keep tuition rates the same and increase the level of financial assistance and incentives.
There are two financial models being used for this analysis. The compatibility for the two seems to be fairly close for the year 2017-18, but offer a cumulative loss variance between $400,000 to $800,000 through 2020-21. So, the models and their underlying assumptions will be reviewed as soon as possible. The setting of tuition rates has been put on hold until this analysis is complete. With the inclusion of all committee representatives in the meeting, there were great discussions and much value from a wide opinion base.
Other discussion items were as follows: Develop a plan B once a proposal is accepted, marketing for new students, faculty salary rate assumptions, student enrolment assumptions/goals for next year and breakeven counts, certain expense assumptions, levels of financial assistance, level of incentives, and an all encompassing full recognition of the rewards and risks with an implementation plan.
CONCLUSIONS: Will be another meeting on Thursday 01/26/2017@ 1715hrs to make a new and proposal for disposition of donation. Universal thanks from the PPC to the members of the Parish Finance, School Finance, and select members of the Pastoral Council for their contribution to this effort.
Tax considerations prohibited using contribution for debt reduction
Fr. Dan explained that growing the enrolment and maximizing the utilization of the schools and facilities have become the paramount goal of the school and parish.
REPORT REGARDING DIOCESAN PLANNING PROCESS: FR. DAN NOLL
DISCUSSION: Parish staff distilled all the input from the Town Hall meetings into 4 distinct points: 2 strengths of the parish, 2 challenges of the parish, 1 hope of the parish, 1 hope for the diocese. Fr Dan reported the results of the 3rd draft.
CONCLUSIONS: Members of the Council gave input to Fr. Dan on a draft of Mary Queen's input into the planning process for the diocese. The input resulted in this final version:
1. Two strengths of your parish:
a. Intentional pursuit of the benefits of diversity
b. Broad variety of ministry activities.
2. Two challenges your parish faces:
a. Further formation of lay leadership, in multiple languages, especially among Hispanic parishioners
b. Growing our ministry to youth, including our school.
3. One hope for the parish: More growth in faith together.
4. One hope for the diocese: That we begin to serve better the entire population in our diocesan territory through more effective communication.
