The Paschal Candle: One candle to rule them all

The biggest and most important candle we have is the Paschal Candle.  It is lit at the beginning of the Easter Vigil from a flame (usually outdoors).  It is ornately decorated with a cross, the letters for Alpha and Omega/the numbers of the current year (representing the intersection of the eternal and the present), and finally five grains of incense (a symbol of sacrifice, the presence of God, and rising prayers).  This tall pillar candle then leads a procession (like the pillar of flame led the Hebrews)  into the darkened church accompanied by this acclamation three times:

   The Light of Christ-Thanks be to God

From it, all people have their own candles lit.  

And then the Exsultet is proclaimed. During which we hear of the historic recountings of sacrifice, fire, and light that have brought us to this moment of salvation through Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection.  

The Paschal Candle is later used during the Easter Vigil to bless the new water in the font which is then used for Baptism. The Paschal Candle stays at the front of the church for the Easter (baptismal) season as a visible sign of new light and life and is lit for each Mass through Pentecost. 

During the rest of the year the Paschal Candle is usually near the Baptismal font and is only lit during Baptisms and Funerals.  During Baptisms it is placed prominently and Godparents (or parents) light a candle from it to represent the light of the faith of the newly born in Christ. They are charged with tending that light and faith. Consider reusing this candle at important moments in the life of the Baptised at your home- birthdays, sacraments, times of need, etc…

At Funerals the Paschal Candle is placed close to the remains as a reminder of the Baptismal light the deceased received. This light accompanies us from rebirth to death and all between (our own alpha and omega) during which Christ desires to shine his light into our darkness and direct us to the true heavenly light.

El Cirio Pascual:

Una vela para gobernarlos a todos

El cirio más grande e importante que tenemos es el Cirio Pascual. Se enciende al comienzo de la Vigilia Pascual con una llama (normalmente al aire libre). Está profusamente decorado con una cruz, las letras Alfa y Omega/los números del año actual (que representan la intersección de lo eterno y el presente) y, finalmente, cinco granos de incienso (un símbolo de sacrificio, la presencia de Dios, y oraciones ascendentes). Este alto pilar de cirio luego encabeza una procesión (como el pilar de llama guiaba a los hebreos) hacia la iglesia a oscuras acompañada de esta aclamación tres veces:

   La Luz de Cristo-Gracias a Dios

A partir de él, todas las personas tienen encendidas sus propias velas.

Y entonces se proclama el Exsultet. Durante el cual escuchamos los relatos históricos del sacrificio, el fuego y la luz que nos han traído a este momento de salvación a través del sacrificio y la resurrección de Cristo.

El Cirio Pascual se utiliza posteriormente durante la Vigilia Pascual para bendecir el agua nueva de la pila que luego se utiliza para el Bautismo. El Cirio Pascual permanece al frente de la iglesia durante la temporada Pascual (bautismal) como un signo visible de nueva luz y vida y se enciende en cada Misa hasta Pentecostés.

Durante el resto del año el Cirio Pascual suele estar cerca de la pila Bautismal y sólo se enciende durante los Bautizos y Funerales. Durante los bautismos se coloca en un lugar destacado y los padrinos (o padres) encienden una vela para representar la luz de la fe del recién nacido en Cristo. Están encargados de cuidar esa luz y esa fe. Considere reutilizar esta vela en momentos importantes de la vida del Bautizado en su hogar: cumpleaños, sacramentos, momentos de necesidad, etc...

En los funerales, el cirio pascual se coloca cerca de los restos como recordatorio de la luz bautismal que recibió el difunto. Esta luz nos acompaña desde el renacimiento hasta la muerte y todo entre (nuestro propio alfa y omega) durante el cual Cristo desea hacer brillar su luz en nuestra oscuridad y dirigirnos a la verdadera luz celestial.
