Sacristans: Keepers of Cool Stuff

One of the best names for a liturgical minister is that of Sacristan.  Originally the person responsible for the sacristy-usually a distinct space set aside for preparing for Mass that holds liturgical items and elements.  Historically Sacristans have been an important office (sometimes called doorkeepers) who would be responsible for all elements of church upkeep (materials and building).  

   At Mary Queen we actually have two sacristies.  A vesting sacristy which is off the gathering area which includes all of the vestments for clergy and servers, liturgical books, and serves as an organizing place for other liturgical ministers (lectors, ushers, facilitators, and servers).It is a relatively small space for all these people, yet one of the main purposes of a sacristy is to give the clergy a prayerful space to vest and prepare for Mass.  With the possibility of a new chapel and reconfiguration of the gathering area space there is a hope for a clergy dedicated sacristy and a separate space for lay ministers to prepare as well. 

  The second sacristy at Mary Queen we call a working scarcristy, and it is in the back of the church and holds candles, incense, vessels, a sacrarium (holy sink for cleaning vessels), linens, and more.  This is the space our sacristans work in primarily.  Our sacristans are responsible for setting up the altar materials for Mass.  This includes altar cloth, corporal, purificators, hosts, wine, chalice, and more… (a later article will review these items and their purposes).  So if you come to Mass quite early you will see our faithful sacristans scurrying around putting out various things.  Our saristans work closely with the Eucharistic Minister making sure we have the needed items for the needed ministers.  They also work from the count of people to provide a good amount of hosts for blessings (we don’t really want to have lots of left over hosts after each Mass).

Sacristanes

Uno de los mejores nombres para un ministro litúrgico es el de Sacristán.  Originalmente la persona responsable de la sacristía, generalmente un espacio distinto reservado para la preparación de la Misa que contiene artículos y elementos litúrgicos.  Históricamente, los sacristanes han sido una oficina importante (a veces llamados porteros) que serían responsables de todos los elementos del mantenimiento de la iglesia (materiales y construcción).  

   En Mary Queen en realidad tenemos dos sacristías.  Una sacristía de vestimentas que está fuera del área de reunión e incluye todas las vestimentas para el clero y los servidores, libros litúrgicos y sirve como lugar de organización para otros ministros litúrgicos (lectores, ujieres, facilitadores y servidores). Es un espacio relativamente pequeño. para todas estas personas, sin embargo, uno de los propósitos principales de una sacristía es brindarle al clero un espacio de oración para revestirse y prepararse para la Misa. Con la posibilidad de una nueva capilla y reconfiguración del espacio del área de reunión. existe la esperanza de una sacristía dedicada al clero y un espacio separado para que los ministros laicos también se preparen.

La segunda sacristía de Mary Queen la llamamos escarristía en funcionamiento, está en la parte trasera de la iglesia y contiene velas, incienso, vasijas, un sagrario (lavabo sagrado para limpiar las vasijas), ropa de cama y más.  Este es el espacio en el que trabajan principalmente nuestros sacristanes.  Nuestros sacristanes son responsables de preparar los materiales del altar para la Misa. Esto incluye mantel, corporal, purificadores, hostias, vino, cáliz y más… (un artículo posterior revisará estos elementos y sus propósitos).  Entonces, si vienes a Misa bastante temprano, verás a nuestros fieles sacristanes corriendo de un lado a otro sacando varias cosas.  Nuestros saristanes trabajan estrechamente con el Ministro Eucarístico asegurándose de que tengamos los artículos necesarios para los ministros necesarios.  También trabajan a partir del conteo de personas para proporcionar una buena cantidad de hostias para las bendiciones (realmente no queremos que nos sobran muchas hostias después de cada Misa).
