Hidden Texts - The Antiphons

If you have looked in a Missal (collection of the readings assigned by liturgical day) you may have noticed a text for Entrance and Communion. You may have also noticed that these texts may not have been said (or sung).  These texts are from the historical tradition of the church and are proper (change from Mass to Mass).  They are referred to as antiphons. Additionally, there are also offertory antiphons; however, these are no longer included in the Roman Missal (the book that contains the ingredients of each Mass).  

The reason you may not hear the Antiphons sung or spoken in our post-Vatican II liturgy, is that we have been given more flexibility in the texts of the music that are sung at Masses at these particular moments.  In many places, particularly in the United States, other songs have been substituted to make it easier for the assembly to more fully participate in these moments.  

The Antiphons like the other proper texts of the Mass (Collect/Opening Prayer, Prayer over the Offerings, and Prayer after Communion) are on a one-year cycle, so they don’t always link thematically with the three-year cycle of readings (lectionary).  However, these texts do link us to the historical tradition of the church and have been carefully cultivated over the centuries.  

During Covid, there was an increased interest in the use of the texts (as they helped us more quickly perform the rites of the church and we were actively discouraging assembly participation in singing).  At Mary Queen we used the antiphons almost exclusively during our first several months of Covid. Even now we have greatly increased the use of the antiphons by using hymn-like settings of them with familiar tunes.

At Daily Masses when we don’t regularly have singing it is not uncommon for these texts to be spoken (as prescribed in the liturgical books). Whether we use them at Mass, we can still use them to enhance our faith.  Take this past week’s Entrance Antiphon as an aspiration for our worship: 

O Sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord, all the earth. In his presence are majesty and splendor strength and honor in his holy place.

Si has buscado en un Misal (colección de lecturas asignadas por día litúrgico) es posible que hayas notado un texto para la Entrada y la Comunión. También habrás notado que es posible que estos textos no hayan sido dichos (o cantados). Estos textos son de la tradición histórica de la iglesia y son propios (cambio de Misa a Misa). Se les conoce como antífonas. Además, también existen antífonas de ofertorio; sin embargo, estos ya no están incluidos en el Misal Romano (el libro que contiene los ingredientes de cada Misa).

La razón por la que es posible que no escuchemos las Antífonas cantadas o habladas en nuestra liturgia posterior al Vaticano II es que se nos ha dado más flexibilidad en los textos de la música que se canta en las Misas en estos momentos particulares. En muchos lugares, particularmente en los Estados Unidos, se han sustituido otras canciones para facilitar que la asamblea participe más plenamente en estos momentos.

Durante Covid, hubo un mayor interés en el uso de los textos (ya que nos ayudaron a realizar más rápidamente los ritos de la iglesia y estábamos desalentando activamente la participación de la asamblea en el canto). En Mary Queen utilizamos las antífonas casi exclusivamente durante los primeros meses de Covid. Incluso ahora hemos aumentado enormemente el uso de las antífonas al utilizarlas en forma de himnos con melodías familiares.

En las Misas diarias, cuando no cantamos regularmente, no es raro que se hablen estos textos (como lo prescriben los libros litúrgicos). Ya sea que los usemos en Misa, aún podemos usarlos para mejorar nuestra fe. Considere la antífona de entrada de la semana pasada como una aspiración para nuestro culto:
