BUILD Update
April 2025
On April 1 over 300 people from all over Lexington attended the BUILD Rally at MQHR. We were reminded about the necessity of working for the needs of our people through the power of the people. We reflected on some of Dr. Martin Luther King’s quotes from the Letter from the Birmingham jail. Such as: “But the judgement of God is upon the church as never before. If today’s church does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authenticity, forfeit the loyalty of missions, and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century. Every day I meet young people whose disappointment with the church has turned into outright disgust.”
We heard updates on our issues for this year:
Eldercare - UK researchers, in coordination with A Caring Place are currently doing an assessment study for moving forward with the Villages model to help our elders to live at home and age safely by accessing services, support and community connection.
Microtransit - We are working with Lextran and our city council towards starting a microtransit pilot study. At the Rally we showed a video to show how microtransit has helped Birmingham, AL. You can learn more about microtransit here:

Lextran is working on the feasibility study and they are currently inviting people to take the following survey that can be used to help shape a potential microtransit pilot.. Please help us and fill it out! You can access the survey here: [https://www.surveyking.com/survey/clwx3].
Renter Concerns: We heard a moving testimony from a young teacher who is stuck in a terrible rental situation. The research committee is still talking to lots of experts who deal with rentals and will narrow down what and who to ask at the Nehemiah Action at the April 28 committee meeting.
The Nehemiah Action is Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 7 PM at the Central Bank Center. Doors open at 6:15. Parking at the Center lot is $6.36 paid by credit card as you enter the lot. Free parking available at St Paul Church. Carpooling from MQHR at 6.
Justice Ministry Network members are inviting friends and family to attend. PLEASE accept their invitations and join us at the 2025 Nehemiah Action!

As Dr. King stated, “Human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability; it comes through the tireless efforts of [people] willing to be co-workers with God, and without this hard work, time itself becomes an ally of the forces of social stagnation.”
