The Psalms express in clear simple language the depest feelings of their writers: joy and sadness, contentment and anger, acceptance and resentment, love and hate, faith and lack of faith, pleasure and displeasure with God.
Regardless of our mental, emotional, or spiritual state-of-being: a Psalm can be found which wpeaks to our most conflicted thoughts, deepest feelings, and greatest spiritual needs.Dates: January 15 to February 26, 9:30am to 1045am
Place: Ministry Room (entry doors are to the side of the outdoor statue of Mary)An author of some of the Psalms was King David, the son of Jesse. He was an intelligent and ruthless political leader. He was sometimes wise and sometimes foolish. His immaturity and emothions and passions and arrogance led him to sin greatly and often. An yet, he always had a deep faith in God. He spoke to God directly, simply, honestly. He was after-God's-own-heart.
Surely, the prayer-poem-songs fo such a conflicted individual contain valuable emotional, intellectural, and spiritual meaning and insight for each one of us today.We will learn about the poetry of the Psalms, the historical situations in which they were written, and the intended meanings of their authors. We will read a number of the Psalms and talk about their meanings for us. We will find, select, and sing together songs found in our Sunday hymnals which are specifically based on various Psalms. And we will compose our own Psalm-prayers.
